The best spots for a morning walk in Gibsons, BC

Rain or shine, I try to start my days with a walk somewhere in Gibsons. In the decade I’ve been here, I’ve developed a few goto routes that I incorporate into my morning routine.

There and back on the seawalk

I usually start at the gravel path in Winegarden Park that leads past the pop-up concert shell and down to the seawalk. Then I follow the seawalk all the way to Armours Beach where I’ll spend a few minutes soaking in the amazing mountain view!

On my return trip, I walk out to the gazebo at the end of the wharf before making my way back to Winegarden Park. If I’m feeling especially energetic, I’ll follow the path to the marina and Breakwater Park before making my way back to where I started.

It’s an easy stroll, but the views, the sounds, and the fresh smell reminds me why I fell in love with Gibsons in the first place.

Inglis Trail loop

If I’m in the mood for something a little more strenuous, I’ll walk a loop at Inglis Trail.

There’s a trailhead at the end of Shaw Road in Upper Gibsons with lots of parking on either side of the street. I take the path all the way down to Stewart Road in Lower Gibsons. At the bottom of the steps, I go back by taking the gradually sloping trail with a few switchbacks. You can follow the trail back to Shaw Road but if you’re slightly adventurous, you can watch for a smaller path that branches off and exits at Eaglecrest Drive. From Eaglecrest Drive, I’ll walk along Inglis Road until I return to Shaw Road.

(When I say “more strenuous,” I mean only marginally. This is a well travelled path where I often meet other walkers trying to get their steps in. Inglis Trail itself is in the trees so it’s cool in the summer and it keeps a bit of the rain off you in the winter. It’s also a good spot to occasionally see squirrels and deer.)

Stairs at Pebbles Beach

On mornings where I really want to get after it, I’ll go to Pebbles Beach off Franklin Road and run/walk steps that lead down the beach. These steps have recently been redone make for great stair workouts.

I start by jogging down the stairs to the beach and hustling my way back up. By the time I’m wrapping up the workout, it’s more like I’m stumbling down to the beach and using the handrails to drag myself back to the top. There’s a picnic table at the top where I’ll stop and enjoy the view while catching my breath before heading home.

Why I love these walks

There’s a rhythm to life here on the Sunshine Coast that walking helps you appreciate. No matter how busy life gets or how many thing I have stacked up on my to-do list, the calm of those morning walks gives me peace.

That’s part of why so many people who visit Gibsons decide to stay. You start by matching the town’s pace when you’re here on a holiday, and before you know it, you don’t want to speed up again.
